GERING, Neb. (April 29, 2026) – Gering High School students are seeing their work come to life across the community thanks to a hands-on partnership with Legacy Coop that is blending skill-building, career exploration and local connection.
This semester, students in GHS’s dual credit welding class partnered with Legacy Coop to create new signage as part of the business’s updated branding. The project gave students the opportunity to apply their technical skills in a real-world setting while contributing something meaningful and lasting to a local business.
“This has been a great opportunity to partner with Gering students on this project,” said Skip Kelley of Legacy Coop. “We really love the final look of the signage and appreciate the pride they took in their work. It’s been great to see this come together.”
For student Thor Binns, the project was more than just welding; it was a chance to learn about a part of the community he had not experienced before.
“I’m not a farmer or rancher, so I didn’t really know much about this business before,” Binns said. “Through this project, I got to learn what they do here. Now when I drive by and see the sign we made, it’s a cool feeling knowing we were part of that.”
GHS instructor Zzyzx Brown says those moments of connection are what make experiences like this so powerful.
“Yes, students are developing important technical skills,” Brown said. “But what makes this special is that they’re also building relationships and understanding how their work fits into the bigger picture. They’re connecting with local businesses, seeing potential career pathways and contributing something tangible to their own community.”
Brown added that this is just the beginning.
“We hope to continue partnering with more businesses and expand these kinds of community collaborations,” he said. “The more opportunities students have to work on real projects, the more confident, skilled and connected they become.”
Through partnerships like this, Gering Public Schools continues to create meaningful, real-world learning experiences where students not only build skills, but also leave their mark on the community they call home.
